Aim

In mountain regions where deforestation and land degradation are common, weeds have become a significant problem. Their proliferation poses a threat to local socio-ecology and thus, it is crucial to take action to control them. Interventions targeting Lantana and Eupatorium weeds are particularly effective when they involve the community. These efforts are important for two reasons: to address the growing problem of Lantana and Eupatorium, and to provide employment opportunities for the tribal community.

Scope

  • To review the status of Weeds (Lantana Camara and Eupatorium) in Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Assam.

  • Development and standardization of technology packages for the utilization of weed (Lantana and Eupatorium).

Outcome

300 women from Sonitpur and Kamrup district in Assam participated and learned how to create handicrafts using weeds.
